San Michele at Dawn
Venice, Italy
San Michele sits between Venice and Murano, an island devoted entirely to memory and silence. At first light the lagoon becomes almost perfectly still, allowing the long brick walls and chapel of the cemetery to appear suspended above the water.
The line of cypress trees rising behind the walls gives the island its distinctive character, forming a dark silhouette against the soft morning sky. In this photograph the gentle dawn light touches the brick façade, creating a warm glow that contrasts with the cool tones of the lagoon.
The composition emphasises the quiet geometry of the island: a single horizontal line across the water, softened by reflection and the subtle movement of light across the sky. The result is a contemplative study of Venice beyond its crowds – a moment of stillness in the lagoon.
