MONOCHROME

Black & White Fine Art Photography

Black and white has always offered me a different way of looking at a photograph. Without colour, I become more conscious of light, shape, texture and the relationship between one part of the frame and another. Sometimes an image seems to reveal its character only when colour is taken away.

I am particularly drawn to monochrome when form and atmosphere become more important than literal description. Architecture can be reduced to line, geometry, light and shadow; familiar landmarks can take on a different character; and minimalist compositions can depend on little more than a single element surrounded by space. In landscapes and seascapes, mist, changing light and long exposure can simplify the scene further, bringing out a sense of scale, solitude, movement or stillness.

These collections bring together the different ways I use black and white, from historic and modern architecture to iconic places, minimalism, landscapes and water. Although the subjects vary, they are connected by the same interest in form, tone, atmosphere and the expressive possibilities of removing colour.
