Black & White Seascape & Waterscape PhotographyWater is one of the subjects I return to most often, and some photographs simply seem to belong in black and white. Without colour, I find myself concentrating more on the movement of the water, the shape of the horizon, reflections and the tonal relationship between sea and sky.
Long exposure is particularly important in much of this work. It can soften waves and tides until the water becomes almost still, leaving an old pier, a line of wooden posts or a distant structure isolated within the frame. At other times, stronger weather and moving water create something much more dramatic. Monochrome allows both approaches to become about light, texture and atmosphere rather than colour.
These photographs bring together coastlines and waters from Britain, Venice and Ukraine, from weathered piers and tidal sands to quiet lagoon water and moonlit reflections. Different places and conditions, but all connected by my fascination with the changing character of water.
