FLOWERS

Flowers draw me in because the closer I look, the more complex they become. What at first appears simply beautiful can reveal extraordinary structure, repeating patterns, delicate textures and subtle changes of colour and light. Photography gives me the opportunity to slow that process down and look much more closely.

Sometimes I want the flower to remain completely recognisable; at other times I move closer and allow shape, line or a small detail to dominate the photograph. I am particularly interested in finding a composition that removes unnecessary distractions and gives the flower space to become the entire subject.

This collection brings together flowers photographed over many years, from magnolia, crocuses and bluebells to dahlias, alliums and seed heads. Cultivated or wild, what continues to fascinate me is the extraordinary variety of form and character contained within something so familiar.
