SALISBURY

I first went to Salisbury for a long weekend and found myself completely captivated by the cathedral. I had of course known of it before, but seeing it in person was something quite different. Its extraordinary spire dominates the city from a distance, yet within the Cathedral Close the building can feel surprisingly calm and intimate.

I returned to it at different times of day, photographing the changing light from sunset and blue hour to softer, mistier conditions. Inside, the experience changes again. Looking upwards, the Gothic arches, vaulted ceilings and intricate details become studies in line, symmetry, colour and light.

For now, this collection is very much a portrait of Salisbury Cathedral, simply because it was the place that held my attention. In time it may grow to include more of Salisbury itself, but the cathedral is where my photographic relationship with the city began.
