Black & White Fine Art Photography of Iconic Landmarks

Some of the places I most enjoy photographing are also among the most photographed places in the world. That creates its own challenge. With landmarks such as Tower Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben or Stonehenge, the subject is already instantly recognisable, so for me the photograph has to become about something more than simply recording what is there.

I look for light, weather, viewpoint and composition that allow me to see these familiar places differently. Sometimes that means working before dawn or after dark; at other times it is a low viewpoint, an unexpected angle or a long exposure that simplifies the scene. Black and white often helps by removing the familiar colour of a place and concentrating attention on shape, structure, light and atmosphere.

These photographs are my interpretations of landmarks that belong to our shared visual memory, approached not as postcards but as individual studies of place, form and mood.
