Fine Art Photography of the Kyiv Sea, Ukraine

I wasn't at the Kyiv Sea for photography. I was staying at Glibivka, on the western shore of the Kyiv Reservoir, commonly known as the Kyiv Sea, for a workshop connected with my work with civil society in Ukraine. Knowing I was beside such a large expanse of water, I decided to get up before dawn and see what the morning might bring.

It turned out to be well worth the early start. Over two mornings the light was extraordinary, yet completely different each time. One dawn was filled with delicate pastel colour, the horizon almost dissolving between sky and water; another brought richly saturated clouds and intense golden light. With the water almost still, the vast reservoir became wonderfully simple and quiet.

These photographs are the result of those two mornings. They were entirely unplanned, which perhaps makes them even more special to me: a reminder that some of the most memorable photographs appear when you simply make the effort to be there before the light arrives.
