WELLS

Wells was one of those places where I found myself completely captivated by the cathedral and the quiet surroundings almost as soon as I arrived. From outside, its scale and extraordinary west front dominate the heart of this small city, but it was inside that I became most absorbed photographically.

The great scissor arches, Chapter House, vaulted ceilings and organ offer an extraordinary combination of structure, detail and light. I found myself continually looking upwards, searching for symmetry, repeating forms and the way natural light moved across the old stone. Nearby, St Cuthbert’s Church offered another, quieter expression of the same architectural richness.

For now, this collection is centred largely on Wells Cathedral because it was what held my attention most strongly. Over time I hope it will grow to include more of Wells and the beautiful historic surroundings that first made me fall for the place.
