LANDSCAPES & WOODLANDS

I am drawn to landscapes less for the grand view than for the way light, weather and the seasons can transform a place. A familiar hillside can become extraordinary for a few minutes when light breaks through cloud, while mist can simplify a woodland until trees, water and sky begin to merge.

Woodlands offer something slightly different. Rather than isolating an individual tree, as I often do elsewhere, I find myself looking at the relationships between trees, paths, water and light, and at the layers of colour and texture created by the changing seasons.

These photographs range from autumn woodland and misty mornings to open countryside, parkland and quieter, more minimal studies of the landscape. They were made in very different places, but what connects them for me is atmosphere: those brief moments when light or weather changes how a landscape feels.
