Glibivka, north of Kyiv, Ukraine
I made A Quiet Moment at Glibivka in 2019, looking east across the Kyiv Sea as the sun set behind me. The light was soft, with pale colour lingering in the sky and reflecting across the still water. One person sat at the far end of the pier, quietly facing the open view.
The pier was what drew me into the photograph. Its weathered boards and blue railings lead towards that small figure, while the wide expanse of sky and water gives the scene room to breathe. I wanted to keep the person present without making them the whole story. From a distance, you can almost imagine taking their place at the end of the pier.
I could not have known, when I made the photograph, what Ukraine would face three years later. That knowledge has changed how I feel about this moment, though the image itself remains open. It holds one person, one evening and a brief pause beside the water.
For me, A Quiet Moment preserves the feeling of being there as the day came to a close. I hope it also leaves space for you to enter the scene and find something of your own in its stillness.
