Venice, Italy
Venice is often associated with movement, detail and spectacle, but there are moments when the city seems to become almost completely still. San Michele was made from across the lagoon, looking towards the island as the light softened and the water settled into an almost seamless surface.
What first drew me to the scene was its simplicity. The long, low line of San Michele seemed to hover between water and sky, its warm terracotta walls held against the dark rhythm of the cypress trees. Above it, the clouds stretched into soft bands of light, while the lagoon gradually lost its texture beneath the long exposure.
I wanted to preserve that sense of distance and quietness rather than turn the scene into something more dramatic than it was. There was something compelling about standing apart from the island and simply looking towards it, with nothing demanding attention and nowhere the eye needed to hurry.
For me, the photograph carries a feeling of stillness, but I do not want to define too precisely what that stillness should mean. It might suggest solitude, calm, contemplation, distance, memory, or simply the feeling of being briefly removed from the movement of the city.
That openness is important to me. I want the image to hold something of what I felt when I stood there, while leaving enough space for someone else to enter the scene and experience it in their own way.
San Michele is therefore less about describing a place than about preserving a moment when the place seemed to become quieter, more distant and somehow more present.

San Michele is produced as a museum-quality Fine Art Print on Aluminium Dibond with Hahnemühle Photo Rag, chosen to preserve the photograph’s delicate tonal transitions, restrained colour palette and sense of quiet stillness.
The softly textured, matte surface of Hahnemühle Photo Rag allows the pale Venetian sky, muted lagoon and warm terracotta architecture to retain their subtlety, while the rigid 3 mm Alu-Dibond backing gives the finished work exceptional flatness and permanence. Fine architectural detail remains beautifully resolved, contrasting with the softness of the long-exposure sky and water.
The artwork is presented without a frame or border, allowing the image to extend cleanly to its edges. Concealed aluminium hanging rails set the print slightly away from the wall, creating a subtle floating effect that complements the sense of space and calm within the photograph.
