VENICE

I had visited Venice a couple of times before photography became a serious part of my life, and although I liked the city, it was returning with a camera that completely changed my relationship with it. Other photographers had told me that Venice was somewhere I simply had to photograph. They were right. I went back and fell completely in love, not only with Venice itself but with the extraordinary lagoon that surrounds it. Even now, arriving across the Ponte della Libertà and seeing the city appear across the water brings the same sense of anticipation.

What keeps drawing me back is the light and atmosphere. I particularly love Venice in winter, when the streets are quieter and the weather is less predictable. A clear morning can give way to rain, mist or fog, while dawn brings a softness to the Grand Canal and lagoon that can make the city feel almost suspended between night and day. Away from the familiar landmarks, there are endless side canals, reflections, worn façades and small details waiting to be noticed.

Whenever I return, I find myself doing much the same thing: walking, photographing, and then walking some more. These images are my own evolving portrait of a city that I went to photograph and ended up loving.
