THE VENETIAN LAGOON

When I returned to Venice with the serious intention of photographing it, I quickly realised that what fascinated me extended far beyond the city itself. The Venetian Lagoon has a completely different rhythm: open water, distant islands, wooden markers and an extraordinary sense of space and stillness. I fell in love with it just as much as Venice.

For me, winter is when the lagoon becomes most compelling photographically. Fog and mist can soften the horizon until water and sky almost merge, while pale winter light and quieter conditions reduce the landscape to its simplest elements. It is a place where very little is needed: a solitary post, a distant island or a small change in light can become the entire photograph.

I return to the lagoon for that quietness. From the waters around Burano to San Michele at twilight, these photographs explore a landscape that feels intimately connected to Venice and yet entirely different from it.
