LANDSCAPES
Black & White Landscape Fine Art PhotographyI am often drawn to landscapes where one simple element gives the photograph its structure: a solitary tree, a road disappearing into the distance, a small building beneath an enormous sky or a mountain emerging from cloud.
Black and white allows me to concentrate on those relationships without the distraction of colour. Shape, texture and tonal contrast become more important, while mist, winter light and dramatic skies can reduce a landscape to something quieter and more elemental. I am particularly interested in the sense of scale created when a small subject is surrounded by open space.
These photographs were made in very different places, from the hills of Dorset and open countryside of England to winter in Kyiv and the mountains of southern Spain. What connects them for me is less their geography than a feeling of space, atmosphere and solitude.
